Songza is in the Long Island City neighborhood of New York City. We’re one subway stop from Grand Central Station and you can practically spit into the East River from our office. Besides a breathtaking view of the Manhattan skyline, Long Island City has great food options and good neighborhood bars. Our office is a funky, open, industrial space, and will never be featured in the Herman Miller catalog.

Over the last 7 years, our team have become expert and highly regarded players in a complex media landscape -- prior to Songza, we founded AmieStreet.com and sold the brand and customer base to Amazon in 2010. Songza’s fast growth, high app ratings and word-of-mouth buzz has us poised for a fun, successful 2013. We work hard. We play music all day. We high five when awesome things happen. We love what we do.

Available Positions

Data Scientist

Songza is all about finding the right music for you, and what you are doing right now, without having to answer a lot of questions. To do this well, we need to mine our vast database of user listening data for actionable intelligence. Typical projects might include:

Concierge targeting
Improve our recommendation engine to show the best blend of playlists the user has enjoyed in the past and new ones they might like.
Curation tools
All our playlists are hand curated, but we need tools to help curators do their job. What's performing well? How will today's catalog updates affect existing playlists? Where is there excessive overlap?
System performance and trending
We need dynamic thresholding to remain sensitive during diurnal low traffic times while reducing false positives during heavy load.
Usage statistics
Retention rate analysis. New feature A/B testing. Explore trends and correlations. Make recommendations for improved data collection.
Presentations
Once the numbers are crunched, you'll need to create (collaborating with our marketing and graphic design teams) presentations of the results. The audience might be end-users, technology partners, advertising customers, investors, or the general public.

There are no fixed requirements for this position. Candidates exist in a high-dimensional space. The ideal candidate's personal attribute vector will exhibit high positive correlation with the following list.

  • Python (pandas, numpy, scipy, sklearn, etc) including the ability to write your own tools.
  • Comfortable in a Unix command-line environment.
  • Lives for huge data sets that are messy, inconsistent, and incomplete.
  • Mining data from MongoDB and unix log files.
  • Well-versed in AWS, Hadoop, and EMR.
  • Recommendation systems. Preferably one to find the best data scientist candidate in our applicant pool.
  • MS or PhD in CompSci, Math, Engineering, or other field requiring rigorous statistical analysis.
  • Experience with statistical and machine learning methods.
  • Strong English writing skills.
  • Technical presentation tools such as matplotlib, d3.js, etc.

Backend Engineer

As a backend engineer, you will be responsible for the databases, and application servers that run behind the scenes on all Songza platforms. This includes implementing new features, performance monitoring, deployment, designing and tuning database schemas, and site automation. A big part of the job will involve scale-up and site reliability.

You love shipping code. You love music. You have worked on large scale software projects. You are language-agnostic. You believe in automated testing and code review.

You need to be able to work in a fast-paced, cloud-based development environment. Our core application lives in AWS. We ship code anywhere from several times a week to several times a day. We're not slaves to any particular methodology, but neither do we believe in cowboy coding. Our goal is to find just enough structure to keep things from turning into chaos without getting bogged down in meaningless process.

We don't have any hard and fast checklist of requirements, but these are the sorts of things we're looking for:

  • Python
  • Django
  • Linux (both as a development platform and sysadmin experience)
  • MongoDB
  • Web technologies such as nginx, haproxy, gunicorn, memcache
  • Web site scale-up, performance tuning, monitoring
  • Working with large data sets
  • DVCS (we use hg, but won’t hold it against you if you know git)
  • HTTP, JSON, REST
  • 6+ years of software development experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of OOP concepts and techniques.
  • A bachelors in computer science or equivalent experience.

Most important, you must love working in a high-speed environment, where everybody makes a difference. Code we write in the morning is often in production the same afternoon. Your ability to drive technical decisions is a function of how good your design and code are, not your job title or how well you dress.

To apply, send resume (Word, PDF or URL) and cover letter to tech-jobs@songza.com.

You need to be able to work in a fast-paced, cloud-based development environment. We ship frequent updates to our mobile products to implement new features, fix bugs, and keep the user experience fresh.

  • Experience with some form of version control (we use mercurial)

Don't See What You're Looking For?

Just because we don't list your dream job, that doesn't mean we don't want to hear from you. We've got a number of positions (engineering and otherwise) in the pipeline that we're not actively recruiting for right now. If the perfect person came along, we'd jump at the chance to bring them on board earlier than planned. Just send us a resume and a cover letter explaining why your life (and our employee list) won't be complete until you're part of the Songza team.

For engineering jobs, send to tech-jobs@songza.com. For all other postions, jobs@songza.com. If you send to the wrong address, we can usually figure out what you meant and get it to the right person, but we'll make fun of you. So don't do that.

See Us On Campus

Songza participates in several academic career fairs over the year. Our on-campus recruiting schedule has wrapped up for spring 2013, but we'll be back on college campuses in the Fall.

We'll be posting specific schools as we finalize our plans this summer, but if you're interested in getting your career off to a great start with Songza, there's no need to wait for us to visit your campus. Just drop an email to tech-jobs@songza.com (for engineering postions) or jobs@songza.com (for other postions). We'd love to talk with you.
