Songza is in the Long Island City neighborhood of New York City. We’re one subway stop from Grand Central Station and you can practically spit into the East River from our office. Besides a breathtaking view of the Manhattan skyline, Long Island City has great food options and good neighborhood bars. Our office is a funky, open, industrial space, and will never be featured in the Herman Miller catalog.

Over the last 7 years, our team have become expert and highly regarded players in a complex media landscape -- prior to Songza, we founded AmieStreet.com and sold the brand and customer base to Amazon in 2010. Songza’s fast growth, high app ratings and word-of-mouth buzz has us poised for a fun, successful 2014. We work hard. We play music all day. We high five when awesome things happen. We love what we do.

Available Positions

Android Development Lead

Songza is looking for somebody who can take over all phases of development, testing, and deployment of our existing Android products, and drive all new development efforts. You will be responsible for recruiting and mentoring an additional Android engineer to fill out our mobile development team.

You will work closely with our backend team to interface with the Songza HTTP API, and our graphic design experts to build a beautiful and fun to use user experience.

You love shipping code. You love music. You have worked on large scale software projects. Like all our engineers, you are language-agnostic, but you're also a Java wizard. You believe in automated testing and code review.

You need to be able to work in a fast-paced, cloud-based development environment. We ship frequent updates to our mobile products to implement new features, fix bugs, and keep the user experience fresh.

We're not slaves to any particular methodology, but neither do we believe in cowboy coding. Our goal is to find just enough structure to keep things from turning into chaos without getting bogged down in meaningless process.

We don't have any hard and fast checklist of requirements, but these are the sorts of things we're looking for:

  • Thorough knowledge of using Eclipse IDE and Android SDK
  • Experience leading a development team
  • Experience building Android apps from scratch utilizing standard SDK techniques
  • Experience creating custom UI elements
  • Experience delivering streaming media on Android
  • Have shipped a commercialy viable Android app
  • A bachelors in computer science or other relevant experience
  • 2+ years of Android development experience
  • Experience with HTTP, JSON, and REST Web Services

Most important, you must love working in a high-speed environment, on a small team where everybody makes a difference. Your ability to drive technical decisions is a function of how good your design and code are, not your job title or how well you dress.

To apply, send resume (Word, PDF or URL) and cover letter to tech-jobs@songza.com.

iOS Engineer

As an iOS engineer, you will be responsible for all phases of development and testing, and deployment of our iOS products. You will work closely with our backend team to interface with the Songza HTTP API, and our graphic design experts to build a beautiful and fun to use user experience.

You love shipping code. You love music. You have worked on large scale software projects. Like all our engineers, you are language-agnostic, but you're also an Objective-C wizard. You believe in automated testing and code review.

We don't have any hard and fast checklist of requirements, but these are the sorts of things we're looking for:

  • 2+ years Objective-C and iOS programming experience
  • Experience building universal apps and implementing custom views
  • Automated testing of applications
  • A solid understanding of HTTP and RESTful webservices
  • Experience with some form of version control (we use mercurial)
  • A bachelors in computer science or equivalent experience

Most important, you must love working in a high-speed environment, where everybody makes a difference. Code we write in the morning is often in production the same afternoon. Infrastructure-ish Engineer

Songza is seeking an experienced infrastructure-ish engineer to ride herd over our production systems and infrastructure.

Wait. WTF is an infrastructure-ish engineer? It's a software engineer who will be a full member of our engineering team, doing a mix of software development and operations. While this position is similar to what is often called a site reliability engineer or a devops engineer, we have no organizational silos. We expect and encourage all members of the engineering team to contribute wherever their skills and interests take them. For this particular position, however, we're looking for somebody whose skills and interests center around keeping our servers going 7 x 24.

We're looking for somebody who can not just manage existing systems, but also drive improvements in infrastructure and process. You need to have the skills to develop tools to handle new situations where existing tools are inadequate.

Our production envinronment is AWS-based, using Ubuntu Linux. Your responsibilities will include managing, deploying, and monitoring all of our AWS assets.

Typical projects will include:

  • Improving our server management and deployment processes. The goal is being able to roll out a new server instance, correctly configured for its role, with a single command.
  • Improving system monitoring. We need to know quickly when any piece of hardware of software has failed or is operating out of normal limits. This includes our own servers as well as external providers.
  • Improving our software deployment process, so new versions can be deployed faster.
  • Improving processes for data backup, operational redundancy, and disaster recovery.

Desired areas of experience:

  • Managing cloud-based Linux servers in a 7 x 24 production environment
  • Managing AWS assets, including EC2, S3, EMR
  • Python for system management
  • System management tools such as puppet, chef, fabic, boto
  • Monitoring tools, including nagios, graphite, statsd, cloudwatch
  • Managing large MongoDB installations
  • Log management tools such as rsyslog and elasticsearch

To apply, send resume (Word, PDF, or URL) to tech-jobs@songza.com.

Engineering Intern

Songza has openings for a small number of engineering interns for the summer of 2014. Depending on your skills and interests, you might end up building a server-side tool, doing data analysis, software testing, or mobile app development.

Candidates should be familiar with Linux, and have good coding skills in a programming language relevant to your project (Objective C for iOS, Java for Android, Python for most everything else). It goes without saying that you should be an avid Songza user, and love music.

If you really want to impress us, include in your cover letter a project proposal. A good proposal would talk about some feature of Songza you have used and found to be unsatisfactory, along with your thoughts for how it could be improved. A great proposal would include all that, plus some estimate of why you think you could do it in three months. A link to your github project where you've already implemented a prototype would blow our doors off!

Candidates should be enrolled in a four-year program leading to a BS (or higher degree) in Computer Science or related engineering discipline. The internships will run for approximately 12 weeks, June through August, although we can adjust the schedule if required to meet your school's academic calendar.

To apply, send resume (PDF, or URL) to tech-jobs@songza.com.
